A celebration of visionary artist Riopelle, icon of freedom and creativity on the cusp of the centenary of his birth in 2023
Montreal, October 3, 2019 – The Chairman of the Board of Directors, Michael Audain, O.C., O.B.C., announces the creation of the Jean Paul Riopelle Foundation in homage to one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. Born in Montreal in 1923, Jean Paul Riopelle cherished the dream of seeing his body of work inspire future generations of artists to explore, innovate and surpass their creative potential.
Riopelle, who also lived in France for more than forty years, was a true ambassador of the national cultural heritage, a visionary of contemporary art, one of the founders of the Automatists movement, signatory in 1948 of the Refus global manifesto, as well as a painter, engraver and sculptor whose immense body of work includes more than 6,000 works.
